About the Captain...
Captain Charlie Filpes was born and raised in Miami, Florida and has been exploring the waters off the Florida Keys since early childhood. In 1979, his family came down to Key Largo for a weekend getaway and loved it so much they bought a small vacation home and have been spending weekends and summers there ever since. As a certified PADI Scuba diver since 1985, Charlie has logged hundreds of dives. Charlie's brother, a full-time commercial fisherman, has taught him the techniques for catching lots of local reef fish. In fact, his specialty is yellowtail snapper, known in the Keys as the "best tasting" fish around. Charlie is also an avid spear fisherman and an expert at catching delicious Florida spiny lobster! Charlie has also been a certified swimming instructor and lifeguard for 17 years and maintains current his Adult, Child & Infant CPR and First Aid certifications. As an elementary school teacher for 12+ years and as a swimming instructor and lifeguard for summer camps, he has taught hundreds of children to swim and to enjoy the water safely. Charlie's other passion is photography, and his photos have appeared in Florida Sportsman magazine, Ocean Drive magazine and the Miami Herald newspaper.
